Spencer Copland Therapy

Counselling Services in Vancouver

I offer individual counselling in Vancouver and online across British Columbia. My work is grounded in a trauma-informed, attachment-based approach that recognizes how past experiences, relationships, and nervous system patterns shape the way we move through the world today.

People often reach out when something feels overwhelming, stuck, or confusing—even if they can’t fully name it yet. Therapy offers a space to slow down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and begin relating to yourself in new ways.

More About My Approach

Anxiety & Chronic Overwhelm

Anxiety can show up in many forms: persistent worry, racing thoughts, perfectionism, difficulty resting, irritability, or feeling “on edge” much of the time. Sometimes it looks like high-functioning competence on the outside and exhaustion underneath.

In our work together, we explore the patterns driving anxiety—not just managing symptoms, but understanding where they developed and what they’ve been protecting. Using trauma-informed and attachment-focused approaches, we work with both thoughts and nervous system responses to build greater steadiness and self-trust.

Therapy for anxiety can involve:
  • Exploring underlying attachment patterns
  • Working with somatic (body-based) awareness
  • EMDR when anxiety is connected to past experiences
  • Developing practical tools for regulation

Trauma & Attachment Wounds

Trauma is not only what happened, but also how the body and nervous system learned to adapt in order to survive. This might show up as emotional reactivity, shutdown, difficulty trusting others, or feeling disconnected from yourself.

My approach to trauma therapy is relational and paced. I integrate EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and attachment-based work to gently process past experiences while strengthening present-day safety and regulation.

Together, we might explore:
  • Early relational dynamics
  • Patterns that repeat in close relationships
  • Emotional triggers that feel disproportionate
  • Protective parts and behaviours that developed for good reasons

The goal is not to “erase” the past, but to reduce its grip on the present.

ADHD

ADHD in adulthood often extends beyond attention challenges. It can involve emotional intensity, shame, procrastination cycles, difficulty with follow-through, and feeling chronically behind.

Rather than focusing solely on productivity strategies, our work can explore how ADHD interacts with identity, self-worth, and nervous system regulation. We look at both practical support and the emotional impact of living with ADHD — particularly if diagnosis came later in life.

Therapy for ADHD and emotional regulation may include:
  • Building regulation skills
  • Understanding executive functioning patterns
  • Working with self-criticism and internal pressure
  • Integrating ADHD within a broader sense of self

Relationships, Identity & Life Transitions

Many people seek counselling not because of a specific diagnosis, but because something in their relationships or sense of self feels unsettled.

This might include:
  • Repeating patterns in romantic relationships
  • Difficulty setting boundaries
  • Navigating identity shifts
  • Grief, loss, or major life changes
  • Questions about meaning and direction

Therapy offers a place to reflect on these transitions with curiosity rather than judgment. Through an attachment-based lens, we explore how past experiences shape present relationships and how new patterns can emerge.

Client Areas: Groups I specialize in helping

Young Adults (18-30)

I work with many young adults who are in undergrad, graduate, PhD, or Juris Doctor programs, as well as those still figuring out whether school is the right path for them. This stage of life involves so many transitions, and I’m passionate about supporting clients as they explore who they are and what they want from life — including entering the workforce and navigating dating and relationships.

Helping Professionals

I support many clients in helping professions, such as therapists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, RMTs, and others. Those of us in caregiving roles also need space to explore our own inner worlds and receive the care and support we give to others.

Young Professionals

I work with many young professionals, especially lawyers — individuals who rely heavily on their logical minds and often understand what’s happening intellectually, yet feel stuck emotionally. I help clients who tend to intellectualize their experiences reconnect with their emotions and bodies in ways that support real change and healing.

While I specialize in these areas, I welcome those at any age and stage of life who are seeking support. Together, we can explore patterns of behaviour, work through relationship challenges, and reprocess past traumatic experiences. Please feel free to reach out to see if we’re a good fit.

In-Person Therapy in Vancouver & Online Across BC

I offer in-person counselling sessions in Vancouver, as well as secure online therapy for clients across British Columbia.

Online sessions follow the same relational, trauma-informed approach as in-person work. Many clients appreciate the flexibility and accessibility of virtual counselling, particularly during busy or transitional periods.

Beginning the Process

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. It’s common to feel uncertain about what to say or where to begin.

If you’re considering counselling in Vancouver or online across BC, you’re welcome to reach out for a consultation to see whether working together feels like a good fit.
